Welcome!
Here are video clips about Braining for those of you who are generally curious, for those of you who are patients who will soon try your first session, and for those of you as employees at a psychiatric clinic who will implement Braining.
The first few clips are primarily aimed at you as a patient. At the bottom are some clips that are more aimed at healthcare professionals, but everyone is of course welcome to watch all the clips!
The films feature staff from the Braining Team at Psychiatry Southwest, while other staff at the clinic "play" patients.
What is Brainstorming?
Åsa Anger, specialist in psychiatry and Braining leader at Psykiatri Sydväst, talks about theory and experiences of physical activity as an additional treatment in specialist psychiatry. The lecture is about 15 minutes long.
Before your first session
Melanie works as an economist and Braining leader at Psychiatry Southwest.
Here she tells you what to think about before your first Braining session.
-
Bring comfortable sneakers!
-
You will be sweaty and out of breath.
-
You don't need to worry. We are here to help you.
The Brainstorming Session
-
Heart-pounding, easy and fun!
-
Everyone can join, the exercises are adapted to the participants' conditions.
-
Calm sessions such as Soft or Yoga provide a nice relaxing feeling and can be offered as a complement or alternative to heart-pumping Braining sessions.
The structure of the brainstorming session
All Braining sessions are structured as follows:
Heart rate raising: Warm-up to prepare the body for tougher training, main part with heart rate raising exercises in the form of steps and strength exercises with a whole-body focus, cool-down to calm the body and breathing.
Adapt: The exercises in the workout are adapted so that both beginners and more experienced exercisers will be out of breath and sweaty. The strength exercises should feel challenging for everyone.
Together: All people need to move, so patients and staff exercise together and share a common experience, which is perceived as motivating and fun.
Individual start-up
When a patient is about to start Braining, they meet with a nurse to take pre-measurements and plan the training. The nurse assesses whether there are physical obstacles to Braining, performs a physical examination if desired, and orders blood tests and assessment scales, which are then followed up by a doctor.
Based on the patient's current routines for physical activity and exercise habits, the patient and the nurse then set clear goals and sub-goals for the Braining period. Appointments are then booked to evaluate these goals. After the Braining period, the patient is allowed to evaluate the Braining period and undergo a new health examination.
Motivation
Motivation work is central to Braining. The start and end, as well as all individual assessments, are excellent opportunities to capture and work on motivation.
We work in a motivating way by:
-
We set clear goals and interim goals based on the patient's circumstances and regularly follow up and evaluate how things are going.
-
In all contacts with the patient, we confirm and reinforce their exercise treatment.
-
We train in a group, together.
Individual reconciliation
Before each session, a short conversation is held where the patients who will participate meet the Braining Leader or Braining Host. Such a conversation can also be held by telephone. The focus of the consultation is:
-
Assessment of physical and psychiatric daily condition to see if the patient can exercise or if other healthcare interventions are needed.
-
Motivate the patient to Braining by confirming that they have arrived and by following up on previously set goals.
-
Answer questions and offer individualized training.
Here we see Kerstin, a nurse and Braining leader, in an individual consultation with a patient.
If something happens...
-
The Braining valuer notices that a patient is feeling unwell and assesses that it is a serious incident. The session is interrupted!
-
Braining host and leader alert emergency care and take action according to A-CPR.
-
Brainstorming host and leader check in with other participants.
-
The Braining leader or host makes a deviation report and informs the Braining team's doctor.
In the event of a less serious incident, such as a patient spraining their foot or having an anxiety attack, the Braining teacher looks at the patient inside the room and the session can continue for the other participants.
The role of the therapist
What can Braining do for your psychiatric patient?
The following is information aimed primarily at you who are doctors and therapists.
